At Pedro's Moving & Storage, we strive to make moving easier for everyone in San Francisco and throughout the Bay Area. Our experienced team provides professional moving and packing services at competitive and fair prices. One of the biggest causes of stress in the moving process occurs when you’re packing. Here are three tips to simplify your move.

Start Early

Packing is one of the most important stages of the move, and is also the stage that's most likely to take longer than expected. It's often difficult to realize just how much stuff accumulates in a living space until you try to pack it all up and move it! To compensate for this, be sure to give yourself plenty of time to pack before your move date - we recommend at least six weeks in advance of the move. This will give you a cushion if things start to take longer than you'd anticipated or if any unexpected problems come up.

Start With What You Don't Need

When packing, it's often difficult to know where to start. How can you pack things away weeks in advance of the move date when you may end up needing to unpack them and use them? That's why we recommend you pack your nonessential items first - anything you don't need on a regular basis is a great place to start. For example, if you're moving during the summer, pack away gloves, winter coats, and ski equipment first. This can help create momentum for completing the rest of the packing process.

Stay Organized

We can't stress this point enough. Be sure to label all of your boxes, and even beyond that, we highly recommend keeping an inventory list of exactly what is in each box. It is best to put these labels on the side of the box rather than the top, so you can still identify the contents even when they’re stacked. This may take some extra time in the beginning, but it'll make things much easier down the line when you're looking for that one specific item and you're not sure where you put it.

Using a moving service can cut down on time and energy you need to pack and unpack boxes, and get settled in. There are also certain protections you have when you use a moving service. Your property is covered if it is damaged during the move in this very important occasion.

In San Francisco and all the surrounding areas, it is incredibly mountainous with steep hills and multiple steps. Many of the buildings also have very narrow doorways. It’s not only can be a hassle, but it can also be dangerous and costly if you don’t know what you are doing. Professional movers have insurance. Their insurance typically covers your items if anything gets broken during the move. For many people, some of the items that are being moved are extremely valuable and irreplaceable. Even though that is the case, it is better to have some type of coverage on it, where as if you move it yourself, there is no coverage on it unless you have insured those items individually.

You want to use movers who are familiar with the terrain and the design of the housing structures in areas like Los Altos Hills, or Mountain View. Moving future up or down a hill or mountain side, if that is where your new dwelling is located, is a difficult task. It is the same idea with the inside of the home. You want to work with a company that is used to going up several flights of stairs. Nobody wants tired, or inexperienced movers trying to carry their bed and dressers up to the third or fourth floor. That is how walls and the property get damaged.

You have to be careful when selecting moving companies. There are some people who say they are movers, but really they are just looking to steal your property or your money. The company you use should have a website, or at least reviews somewhere on the internet. The moving company you are thinking about using has no digital footprint, not even a social media page or website, it might be better to choose a different company. You should know what the moving service you use has done and if they are a reputable company. That will help to do decide who to choose when it is time to move.

Don’t choose just anybody when you are ready to move. Choose a company who cares about getting the job do not just quickly, but also correctly and carefully.

Moving takes time and energy. At Pedro's Moving & Storage, we are big on hassle-free moving. Moving can seem overwhelming, but with the proper preparation you can avoid a lot of unnecessary stress. Here are some of the most common mistakes people make when they move. Check out our tips on how you can easily steer clear of some moving disasters

Not Researching Companies

Begin researching companies 2-3 months prior to your move out date. Make sure your movers carry a moving license. Check out their record with the Better Business Bureau, and ask for references. Don’t forget to ask for an in-home estimate. It’s important to plan out your budget ahead of time.

Not Planning Packing

Packing isn’t as easy as it looks. There’s a significant amount of planning that goes into packing. We recommend taking inventory before and after packing. Start packing 8 weeks before the move date. Gather the right size boxes and packing materials. Sort through your items, and toss out anything you don’t need. Get a head start by packing the things you scarcely use first.

Not Labeling & Sorting Boxes

Label your boxes – write down the contents of the box, and include handling instructions for fragile or heavy objects. This will help your movers load the boxes accordingly, and it will also be beneficial for you when you have to unpack.

Leaving Your Valuables With The Movers

As great as your movers are, the best way to ensure your valuables make it to your new home safely is to pack them with you. Safely wrap and pack your jewelry, heirlooms, professional camera, important documents and any prized collections with you in your carry-on or car.

Packing Flammables & Other Non-Movables

Communicate with your moving company in advance to check if your movers can transport any flammable items or explosive items, such as firearms, your barbeque grill or your alcohol. We don’t want to put anyone in danger during your move, and we also want to risk damaging any of your items.

Lifting And Carrying Everything

Don’t attempt to lift and carry everything into the truck. Save your back, and use dollies, carts and other moving equipment to lessen the burden.

Forgetting Rover Needs To Move Too!

Don’t forget about your pets! They need to prepare to move to. If you are flying to your new home, check with your vet and your airline for proper flying procedures. Make sure your pet has all its immunizations up to date, its insurance, and all of its identification tags.

Not Preparing A “Survival Kit”

Pack a small bag with the items you will need immediately during the first week at your new home. We recommend including enough clothes to wear for a week, snacks and non-perishable foods, a first aid kit, your cell phone charger, and light tools for opening your boxes.

Forgetting To Change Your Address

Contact your postal office to set up mail forwarding to your new address. Don’t forget to change your mailing address with your banks, health insurance and car insurance.

Not Checking Your Insurance

Knowledge is power! Have a good understanding of what your insurance entails. Know how much it covers in damages and what exactly it covers.

Packing up your home and moving can be a very time consuming and stressful process. If moving on your own sounds downright awful, then it’s time to starting looking towards a professional moving company. Knowing which company to go with is crucial to making sure you have a happy, stress free move instead of a horrible one. Moving is a stressful enough experience so finding a professional who is honest with their pricing, properly accredited, and provides a quick response to your needs is important for a smooth, care free moving experience.

Do the Research

This is the first step in finding a professional moving company. Always shop around and get recommendations. Ask your friends, family, and neighbors. Consult local real estate agents. Check the Internet for local companies located near your home and always read reviews if provided.

Don’t Just Look for the Cheapest Price

Once you’ve narrowed down the search to a few companies, it’s time to get written estimate from each one. This should be a very thorough, itemized list of all the work to be performed. If a business isn’t willing to send an employee to do a free in-home estimate, don’t waste your time with them! Be careful about phone estimates as the price can often be underestimated and you may be charged for the “difference”. Make sure you and the movers know of every aspect of the move prior to any work being preformed, as to eliminate any room for misunderstandings.

When looking for a moving company, your first impulse is to go with the lowest quote. Resist that urge.

When calling a professional, you get what you pay for. If the moving company is giving you a lower price than their competitors, you can almost count on corners being cut. Meaning your belongings will pay the price in the end.

Always Ask for Credentials

Whether you’re moving out of state or just down the road, the moving company should have some type of moving license, period. Make sure the company you contact has been in business for at least several years. Ask for references, check reviews on the Internet such as Yelp, YellowPages, etc. Always ask to see their proof of insurance and proper licensing. Regulations on licenses vary from state to state, but any company that moves across state lines will have a specific Department of Transportation (DOT) number assigned to them.

Always Ask Questions About the Contract

Take a few minutes and read the moving contract carefully before you and the contractor sign it. It should have every aspect of the move itemized, so if you see something that looks suspicious, don’t hesitate to ask about it. Always remember to keep your copy of the contract safe just incase there are any disputes later on.
